2006-2007 Volunteer Guide & Job Descriptions
The following is a brief description of the Chambers
PTSA committees. All committees need a
Chairperson(s) and most need several volunteers. Where you discover your niche(s), please sign
up on the volunteer form. We need you!
Billboards
& Banners: Creative volunteer(s) needed to update and change the hallway
billboard(s) and create banners and billboards for various committees upon
request.
Book Fair: Help staff the Scholastic
Book Fair Fundraiser during conference week in November (the last full week
before Thanksgiving break). The Fair
opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m.
Lots of volunteers are needed to cover the two-hour shifts during the
day plus one or two evening events. Typically,
funds raised have been donated to the school library.
Chambers
Champ:
Puts out a monthly Chambers PTSA Newsletter.
Coordinates articles submitted from PTSA President(s), Committee Chairs,
etc., including copying and distribution at school.
Chambers
Directory:
Organizes and types the Chambers Student Directory (information received from
first-day-of-school packets) including copying and distribution. This job begins in September and should be
ready for distribution by early November.
(Last year’s Directory on Disk is available.)
Classroom
Coordinator: Each teacher needs one or two volunteers to organize the Halloween
& Valentine’s Day parties. Some
teachers may have other duties.
Community
Liaison:
Work with community vendors and build partnerships.
Cookie
Brigade:
Provide cookies (baked or store bought) for special events during the school
year such as Open Houses, Orientations, and Walk-a-thon
Enrichment: Advertises, coordinates,
and organizes after-school enrichment programs for six-week sessions during the
fall, winter, and spring trimesters; including enlisting the help of
instructors. (Instructors are
compensated for their time.) Works with
the Chambers office staff to register and accept payment for the classes.
Fall
Carnival:
A fun, family evening event in October (usually the Friday before
Halloween). Coordinates and organizes
the even (through Vics) including purchasing / renting the game booths and
prizes for the carnival. Volunteers
needed to sell tickets and refreshments, operate game booths, set-up, clean up,
and hand out prizes.
First-Day-of-School
Packets:
Help put together, organize, and sort first day packets.
Field Day: This is an outdoor,
all-school event held in June organized by the Chambers PE teacher. Volunteers are needed to help encourage and
direct the students at the activity stations.
Fourth
Grade Moving On: This is the celebration held near the end of the school year in
June. Volunteers needed to help with graduation
party set-up, clean up, and refreshments (3rd grade parents) as well
as a special activity for the students.
Fundraising: Coordinates, organizes, and
completes the PTSA’s major fundraising event in the fall. Volunteers are needed in September and
October to assist with record keeping, ordering, and distribution.
Health
Screening:
Fall activity (1-3 hours) under direction of the Chambers school nurse. Volunteers needed for one morning to assist
with measuring height, weight, testing eyesight, and hearing.
Historian: Records Chambers events
(including field trips) during the school year by taking pictures and
scrapbooking. Scrapbooks are located in
the school library.
Legislative: Keeps current on
legislative issues affecting the education, health, and welfare of children
through the Washington State and National PTA.
Informs Chambers PTSA members of the issues at hand. Attends a convention in the fall, usually in October.
Membership: Collects membership dues and
tabulates the membership of our PTSA.
All data is entered into the State PTA website.
Pictures: Volunteers needed to help
photographer with arranging students (line-up, check clothing and hair) for
individual pictures in October and class / casual pictures in April.
Popcorn: Pops and sells popcorn once
a month for Popcorn Day at school, and occasionally at special events
throughout the school year.
Reflections: This is a National PTA
competition (entry deadline of early February) in creative arts. Help advertise and coordinate the Reflections
competition per the National PTA themes and guidelines. Volunteer judges are needed during the winter
to evaluate Chambers Primary student entries.
Science
Fair:
Volunteers are needed to coordinate, judge, and assist with this event, which
is held in February.
Sock Hop
& Auction: This fundraiser and family event is held in March. Many volunteers are needed to assist with
gathering and marking items, publishing the items, advertising the auction, and
helping with the Sock Hop.
Spring
Event:
A family fun night. In previous years
the event has been the Rainiers Baseball game for Chambers families.
Staff
Appreciation: Volunteers to provide staff surprises throughout the school year
including staff appreciation week, lunches, and flowers.
Student /
Adult Lunches: Schedule student / adult lunch weeks for all classrooms during the
school year. Job is complete once dates
are coordinated with teachers and lunchroom staff and reported to office
secretary.
Sweatshirts: Coordinates yearly buying
(by students and staff) of school T-shirts and sweatshirts for school
spirit. This job is done in the fall.
Volunteer
Coordinator: Gathers lists from First-Day-of-School Packets and distributes lists
to the respective committees. Calls and
arranges the volunteers for picture days and Health Screening.
Walk-a-thon: This is a spring
fundraising event that the students really enjoy. Lots of volunteers are needed to organize and
carry out this event, including collecting pledges and setting up / manning
stations for handing out water, treats, and rewards to the participating
students. Typically, funds raised are
earmarked for the direct benefit of the children (i.e., playground equipment,
library books, and software).
Winter
Wonderland: This event will be held in December after school. The students sign up / pre-purchase items to
make as holiday gifts for their family members.
Many volunteers are needed to help with the craft stations. Chairperson(s) will purchase items and
coordinate the volunteers and students.
Writing
Fair:
Volunteers are needed to coordinate, judge, and assist with this event.
